Action leads to inspiration which is followed by motivation. This is what Mark Manson explained in his book “The subtle art of not giving a f*ck” calling it the “do something” principle. In short, if you want to create something new (a business, a website, a podcast, a blog etc.) you have to just start doing it — no matter how. Because you see, the problem usually is that our mind will always find an argument why we should wait to start or launch that thing we are so interested about— there might be a better time, a better place or we tell ourselves that the idea or content is not perfect yet and could be further improved. By doing so, our subconscious mind is actively avoiding potential risks and the negative emotions associated with failure such as embarrassment and disappointment. And from an evolutionary standpoint that actually makes sense! It´s our instincts deeply rooted in everyone of us that tell us to avoid risks and stay safe in order to survive. However, you might have noticed that we are no longer living as “farmers and hunters”. Hence, such instincts are not aligned with our modern times anymore (its 2020 people, we have to wake up!). In our today´s society such behaviour not only slows us down in many areas of life but actually keeps many people from following their true passions and living up to their fullest potential (think about your own experiences! is there maybe anything that you always wanted to start but never actually did it? why was that?). In fact, I sometimes find myself in similar situations, where I postpone certain actions giving in to the protective nature of our minds. But not any longer!
“There is no passion to be found playing small — in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living” (Nelson Mandela)
With this post I now apply the “do something” principle to myself — finally starting my own blog! By doing so I want to pursue my passion for self development and psychological topics and create content that I (and hopefully some of you) find interesting and worthwhile reading (btw sorry for the long intro above but I somehow wanted to make it more interesting instead of just saying that I am starting this blog). The reason for covering these specific topics is twofold: 1) I found myself applying a lot of the techniques taught in books and preached by life coaches (such as Tony Robbins, Jay Shetty, Eckhart Tolle etc.) on a daily basis and 2) these insights and techniques really helped me to “rewire” myself (e.g. living in a more conscious way; question my own beliefs/values; create new habits) and facilitated to understand myself and the people around me on a deeper level.
I truly believe that engaging in mindfulness and self reflection/ development is more important than ever before in human history. Due to the digitalization and interconnectedness of our world we are constantly overloaded with new information attributing to the stress we already experience (at work, in our relationships etc.). Besides, new technologies which in fact come with a set of opportunities (social media, dating apps, streaming services, job portals etc.) also amplify the stress levels and the uncertainty even further. With regards to Our World in Data — a online publication platform that provides information on the historical development of the living conditions of mankind — roughly 800 million people suffer from any mental health disorder (~11% of world population) and more than 264 million people across all ages suffer from depression by today (~3.4% of world population). I am certainly not saying that these numbers are consequence of the new environment (actually the numbers remained constant over the last 30 years) but it highlights the importance and urgency of the topic. I am aware of the fact that a blog cannot cure depression (if someone is really depressed they surely need professional help) but at least it can make people think about mental health and offer them a starting point to take care of themselves, eventually (in best case) preventing more mental health issues. Consequently, I want to share some of the content I found inspiring and helpful and explain some of the techniques being used in order to give you a glimpse what is out there. I deeply hope that by writing this blog, I can motivate some you to get involved in this very relevant yet still overlooked area, therefore eventually helping you to become a better version of yourself. As the name of the blog suggests it´s about our mind and how we— when starting to understand and get control of it — can make better use of our TIME, change our individually perceived REALITY and in the end create a better LIFE (here as well there will be a post about each of these coming later).
Thanks for reading until here (hopefully) and I hope you enjoyed the content.
Cheers, Nick
