Book Review

The Power of NOw

By: Eckhart Tolle

September 1, 2022

Is This Book Right for me?

Summary: “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle is a powerful and transformative book that guides readers on a journey to discover the true nature of their being. At the core of the book is the idea that true happiness and freedom can only be found by living in the present moment, rather than dwelling in the past or worrying about the future. Tolle encourages readers to let go of their thoughts and emotions, and to simply be in the here and now. Through a series of profound insights and practical exercises, the author shows how to transcend the mind and access a deeper state of consciousness. The book is a call to awaken to the power of the present moment, and to live a more fulfilled and joyous life. It is an invitation to discover the beauty of the now, and to find the peace and happiness that has always been within you.

Recommendation: Must read – it was truly one of the first books I read on spiritual topics that actually got me interested in eastern culture, the teachings and then (after a while) also Buddhism. While this book is not an easy read (see below) it offers plenty of great advice written in a unconventional touching (at least for me) way.

 4.7/5

Level: Special – while this book does not require any background information it uses a lot of metaphorical and (at least for our modern, westernized world) unusual language. The requirement to get something out of this book is certainly to accept the way of “phrasing” the author applies and to not think too much about the meaning of certain words being used (e.g. “being”).

Special
Storyline (not 1:1 according to chapters in the book)

The book is divided into four main sections, each of which delves deeper into the concepts and practices of living in the present moment:

  • The first section, “You Are Not Your Mind”, sets the stage for the rest of the book by introducing the idea that our thoughts and emotions are not who we truly are. Tolle encourages readers to observe their minds and become aware of the constant stream of thoughts and emotions that run through it. He explains that by becoming aware of these thoughts and emotions, we can begin to detach from them and find a sense of peace and stillness within ourselves.
  • The second section, “Consciousness: The Way Out of Pain”, explores the concept of consciousness and how it relates to pain and suffering. Tolle argues that pain and suffering are caused by our identification with our thoughts and emotions, and that by becoming conscious of this identification, we can break free from it. He goes on to explain how to access a deeper state of consciousness and how this can lead to a more fulfilled and joyous life.
  • The third section, “The State of Presence”, delves deeper into the practice of living in the present moment. Tolle explains how to access a state of presence through a variety of techniques such as meditation and mindfulness. He also provides practical exercises that can be used to cultivate a sense of presence in daily life.
  • The final section, “Enlightenment: The End of Suffering”, brings the concepts and practices of the previous sections together to explore the idea of enlightenment. Tolle explains that enlightenment is not something that can be achieved, but rather a state of being that already exists within us. He encourages readers to let go of their thoughts and emotions and to simply be in the here and now. Through this, they can experience the beauty of the present moment and find the peace and happiness that has always been within them.

As we journey through the pages of “The Power of Now”, Tolle’s writing is an enlightening and inspiring guide to those seeking to live in the present moment. He takes us on a journey through our thoughts and emotions, and shows us how to transcend them, and find a deeper state of consciousness. Through practical exercises and profound insights, he teaches us how to access a state of presence, and to find the peace and happiness that has always been within us. It’s a story of personal transformation and a guide to awaken the power of the now.
