Summary: “Siddhartha” tells the story of a young man’s journey to enlightenment. The protagonist, Siddhartha, begins his journey as a privileged, ambitious son of a Brahmin in ancient India. Despite his comfortable life, Siddhartha feels an emptiness inside and sets out to find the meaning of life. He first joins a group of ascetics, but quickly realizes that their severe practices don’t bring him any closer to understanding the world. He then becomes a wealthy merchant, but again finds himself unfulfilled.
Finally, Siddhartha meets a wise ferryman named Vasudeva, who teaches him about the unity of all things and the importance of living in the present moment. Through his experiences and relationships, Siddhartha ultimately reaches a state of enlightenment and inner peace. Hermann Hesse’s “Siddhartha” is an inspiring story of one man’s quest for understanding and fulfillment, and the wisdom he discovers along the way.
Siddhartha Gautama, also known as the Buddha (actually not the first Buddha), was a spiritual leader and founder of Buddhism who lived in ancient India. He is revered as one of the most important figures in the history of religion, known for his teachings on the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path, which offer a path to enlightenment and inner peace.

Recommendation: Must read – my absolute favorite book. This book was actually the first time I read something about Buddhism and directly got me! While certainly not understanding everything that was told (especially in relation to Buddhist teachings), this book has not only great learnings to offer (illustrating some of the buddhas teachings in a story-like way) but is also extremely well written. This book has something to offer for both people who have never heard of Buddha and are intrigued and people who are familiar with the story, as the story really casts a spell on you.
Level: Beginner – this can be seen as the best introduction to Buddhism & Buddha as it portrays the most important aspects of Buddhas life in a engaging way. I would recommend reading this classic before any of the other books I have reviewed which are connected to Spirituality or Buddhism. Even if you are not interested in learning something here, the book is well written and the story is captivating making it even a great fiction book.
The book is divided into four parts, each of which explores a different stage in Siddhartha’s spiritual journey:
Throughout the novel, Siddhartha’s journey is a reminder that true understanding and fulfillment can only be found within ourselves. Hesse’s writing is evocative and poetic, painting a vivid picture of Siddhartha’s inner struggles and triumphs. “Siddhartha” is a book that will leave you with a deeper understanding of yourself, the world, and the nature of existence. It’s a story that will inspire you to embark on your own journey of self-discovery and to find your own path to enlightenment.
This book offers various inspirations around overcoming desire and attachment, understanding the human nature, realizing that material success does not equate true happiness therefore providing provide valuable lessons in finding balance and purpose beyond mere achievement. I will not summarize any of my personal insights here given that I believe that this book offers each of us different learning opportunities based on each of our experiences and life circumstances.
