Summary: “Quantum and the Lotus” is a captivating and thought-provoking story written by French Buddhist monk and molecular biologist Matthieu Ricard that delves into the intersection of science and spirituality. The story follows two main characters, a physicist (Trinh Thuan) and a Buddhist monk (Matthieu Ricard), as they embark on a journey of discovery and understanding. As they explore the mysteries of quantum mechanics and the teachings of the Buddha, they begin to uncover the hidden connections between science and spirituality. They discover that, despite their seemingly disparate beliefs, they are both seeking the same fundamental truths about the nature of reality. Through their conversations and experiences, they come to understand that the universe is not as separate and disconnected as it may seem, and that the principles of science and spirituality are deeply intertwined. This realization inspires them to seek a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them, leading to a profound sense of inner peace and harmony. “Quantum and the Lotus” is a journey of self-discovery that will leave you questioning the nature of reality and your place in the world.

Recommendation: Must read – expect to learn how Buddhist concepts relate to most recent findings of quantum physics. This book was one of the most transforming books that made me believe in Buddhist concepts as it clearly connects a logical dimension (Western worldview) to the spiritual path of Buddhism (Eastern worldview).
Level: Complex – before starting this book I´d recommend reading some background on Buddhism (e.g. about Buddhas life as well as the concepts which are being usually taught). In addition, this book is not an easy read given that concepts of quantum physics are being referenced. Make sure to take your time and expect to cross-read on quantum physics (no worries no mathematical formulas) to understand the intersection of both views better.
The book is divided into several chapters, each of which delves deeper into the themes of science and spirituality, and the ways in which they can be used to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us:
Overall, “Quantum and the Lotus” is a journey of self-discovery
that will leave you questioning the nature of reality and your place in the
world. It is a story that will inspire you to seek a deeper understanding of
yourself and the world around you, and to see the interconnectedness of
everything. Through the journey of Mark and Tenzin, you will come to understand
that the principles of science and spirituality are deeply intertwined and that
by understanding this, you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself and the
world around you.
