Recommendation: Must read – while this book is not only inspiring and has plenty of lessons to offer it is also a well written story about a man who brought Eastern wisdom (in particular Kriya Yoga) to the Western world (this book was handed out at Steve Job’s funeral).

 4.5/5

Level: Intermediate – while this book does not require any background information it uses a lot of metaphorical language and supernatural abilities that need some background in Eastern culture to fully understand. Tipp: Do not take everything presented too literal.

Storyline (not 1:1 according to chapters in the book)

The book is divided into several chapters, each of which explores a different aspect of Yogananda’s life and teachings:

  • In the first chapter, “My Parents and Early Life”, Yogananda introduces readers to his childhood and family. He describes growing up in a small village in India, surrounded by the beauty and spiritual energy of nature. He tells of his early interest in spirituality and the profound impact that his parents had on his life. He recounts his first experience of spiritual transcendence, and how that experience set him on the path to seek out a true spiritual master.
  • In the second chapter, “Search for a Guru”, Yogananda begins his search for a spiritual teacher. He travels to different parts of India, meeting with a variety of gurus and holy men. He describes the powerful and transformative experiences he has with each one, and how each guru helped him to understand more about himself and the nature of spiritual truth.
  • The third chapter, “Master and Disciple”, Yogananda meets his guru, Sri Yukteswar, who becomes his spiritual guide and mentor. He recounts the many lessons and teachings that Sri Yukteswar imparts to him, and how each one helped him to further his understanding of the spiritual path. He also shares how he learns Kriya Yoga, the spiritual practice that would become the foundation of his teachings.
  • The fourth chapter, “Kriya Yoga and Christ Consciousness”, Yogananda explores in depth the practice of Kriya Yoga and how it leads to an expansion of consciousness, and the unity of oneself with the divine. He also describes how his understanding of the teachings of Jesus Christ deepened as a result of his spiritual practices.
  • The fifth chapter, “The Law of Miracles”, Yogananda shares examples of the miraculous occurrences that happened around him and how they were the result of the power of spiritual practices. He also describes the nature of miracles, and how they are expressions of the underlying unity of all things.
  • The sixth chapter, “Self-Realization Fellowship”, Yogananda describes the founding of Self-Realization Fellowship, the spiritual organization that he established to share his teachings with others. He talks about the growth and impact of the organization, and how it continues to spread the message of spiritual truth to people around the world.
  • The seventh chapter, “Epilogue”, Yogananda reflects on the significance of his journey, and the lessons that he has learned. He encourages readers to take inspiration from his story, and to seek their own spiritual truths.
